My 21st Century Woodbadge Trail – The Tickets

My first ticket was supposed to be a course teaching scouters how to use Packmaster at the 2008 University of Scouting on Saturday, February 02, 2008 at Washburn University. When I arrived at the University of Scouting there were not enough people to fill both classes so another scouter taught the morning class. They did ask me to teach the ‘scouting on the Internet’ course. Having only two hours to prepare, I did well with the course. Even though I did well, I do not feel I did well enough to count this as a ticket.

My first ticket was a blood drive. I called the local blood bank and talked to a representative. We set a possible date and place. We decided to have it at the Oskaloosa High School on February 8th, 2008. Next I contacted the school to see if the date was open and filled out the Facility Use Agreement Form. The blood bank representative and I met and she gave me the packet full of fliers and phone numbers of previous donors. I spent many nights on the phone informing people about the blood drive and setting up appointments. The day of the blood drive I went to the school to help set up, assist with donors, and later help pack up. And yes I gave some blood. We had a very good turn out.

My second ticket was to get Leave No Trace Trainer (LNT) trained on Friday, April 11-13 2008. The plan was we were going to camp outside but since it was cold and snowing, plus this was LNT and not a survival course, we slept in the basement of the mess hall. The training course required 16 hours of training and to present a LNT topic. I chose ‘Be Considerate of Other Visitors’. Since getting trained I have reviewed the guidelines with the boys in our pack, some boys at my church, as well as, encouraged some online friends to get trained themselves.

My third ticket I changed. I was going to create Guidelines for our pack, but because of a lack of time I chose to get Merit badge Counselor trained. I even got my wife to take the training.  I chose to be a counselor for the district. The merit badges I am a counselor for are Camping, Canoeing, Computers, Electronics, Family Life and Gardening.

My fourth ticket I changed as well. I was going to do an Aerial Map of Camp Jayhawk and have it displayed on the grounds. Again, however, due to a lack of time I chose to teach Den Chief Training at the University of Scouting on Saturday, November 15, 2008 at the LDS Church. I searched the internet looking for Den Chief training materials, but unfortunately, I found very little there and not what I was looking for. I ended up compiling the data I found on the net and books I already had in order to make a 100 slide Power Point presentation. As well as hand outs and quiz questions. I ended up with seven boys for the all day course. At lunch they did a couple of skits for the adults and had a fun time.

For my fifth ticket, I became a District Trainer. On Saturday, January 17 2009 I took Trainer Development Conference (Trainer’s Edge) formerly known as “Trainer Development Course” also formerly known as “Train the Trainer. Plans are now being made for me to teach a class at the Spring Camporee.
